Solid Rock of Reality
by: Ellence Meece
While we run to and fro, scrambling from appointment to appointment, frantically performing workday to workday, or work-out to work-out, struggling to make our lives better . . . ourselves better, there's a bigger reality waiting for us.
What if we stop and ask ourselves an important time management question: In light of eternity, where do my hours of energy count? Is the major part of my day spent gratifying myself? Does my busyness have eternal value? Eugene Peterson in his book, Where Your Treasure Is, wrote about the solid rock of reality:
We need God under our feet and God in our lungs . . . God is the great continent of reality on which we live. If we deny Him in practice by attempting to live in the ocean of the self, we are soon fatigued and require all kinds of artificial aids to keep us afloat--pieces of driftwood, life jackets. It is not our proper environment. We are forever getting our lungs full of water, getting rescued, and receiving artificial respiration. Then we go out and start it all over again.
Why don't we simply come out of the ocean of the self and stand on our own two feet on the dry land of the kingdom of God?
What a refreshing visual! Standing freely and securely on a continent of dry ground . . . in the reality of God's kingdom!
No wonder Jesus issued the timeless invitation in Matthew 11:28, "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest."
This is a standing invitation for you and me. If you can picture yourself gasping in the ocean of self, floundering to grab a life-line of sanity, just remember this invitation. There is a solid rock to stand on, a wide continent of reality away from a self-driven agenda. A life free of artificial aids to keep us propped up! An existence of simply breathing God . . . in a proper environment that is natural to our eternal being.
