Having Fun
by: Ellene Meece
Upon moving from the city to our small rural community a few years ago, I was in a room with several ladies when one of them introduced herself and promptly asked, "What do you do for fun?"
I was taken aback and stammered around trying to find an answer. What did I do for fun? I knew she meant some type of recreation that gave me pleasure; something that got me away from the routine. I was so intense in my work and day to day routine that a simple diversion was not a part of my schedule and I had no answer.
But, I made a decision then and there to be able to answer that question if it was ever posed again. I began thinking about the possibilities and realized that even though many of my peers in the beautiful area where I live go hiking, horseback riding or snow shoeing; I wasn't really into any of those activities. However, once upon a time, I allowed time for my creative side in art and music.
That was over ten years ago. And even though I haven't enrolled in an art class or anything similar yet, I found a few outlets to take my mind off "work" and laugh a little.
One such outlet was joining a ladies social club in my little town. At one of my first meetings, I thought I would help them out in their structure and suggested they have a mission statement - something about mentoring younger women in home life skills, or something like that. One of them looked me directly in the eye and said, "Our mission statement is 'HAVE FUN.''' And so we do. We craft, we go on adventures, we learn new things together; but, most of all, we laugh and have fun.
What do you do for fun? It is essential for our well-being and for our success in business and life.
I don't know if Jesus went fishing, even though he liked to hang out with guys who did. But, I'm sure he knew how to laugh and separate himself from the intensity of life and just breathe.
And while we are at it, let's have fun in our occupation too! Dale Carnegie said, "People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing."
So, I ask you, what do you do for fun? If you were like me and are stammering right now, make a decision to discover a respite for yourself where you can take deep breaths and . . . have fun
